The astrological sign of Cancer The Crab (June 23-July 23), ruled by the Moon and associated with the element of Water, appears at the summer solstice. My illustration reinterprets her traditional image portraying her as a hybrid human-female arthropod with a collection of pincer-like hands grasping the symbols of her identity for she embodies both male and female qualities. Her symbols include her zodiac sign, the alchemical concentric circle for the trinity of mind, body and soul, and two discrete triangles representing aqua (water) and aqua vitae (water of life). Cancer The Crab is the key to the continuing cycle of life; she is also known as the portal for passage of souls to earthly existence. Wearing a skirt that is the ocean and an array of stars on her shirt, she reaches for the moon with a tender embrace.
