This card for the sign of Aquarius (January 21-February 19) is adapted from my book The Alchymical Zoodiac: A Celestial Bestiary (Imaginarius Editions, 2003). My illustration for Aquarius, The Water Carrier recalls a 1974 encounter with a middle-aged beverage server in Jerusalem’s Old City. The strong coffee I tasted there is shown by a sprig of coffee berries springing from the lid of the copper carafe/samovar. His colorful clothing was inspired by Druze, Mongolian and Carpathian Mountain costumes suggesting strength and spirituality. The fish flying from his cup portends the arrival of Pisces, next in order on the cosmic wheel. The stars above the cup are the Constellation Aquarius.
