The illustration for this card was developed from a roughly sketched card made many years ago for my children. I wanted to depict the joy of the Chanukkah holiday with its immediately recognizable symbols: the spinning dreydls (tops), the gold coins (usually foil-wrapped chocolate) and the menorah with eight candles, one lit for each night of the holiday. One of figures is holding an extra candle called a shamash. It sit at the top of the menorah and is used to light the other candles. The menorah or chanukkiah is inspired by the gates in the walls around Jerusalem and the figures? Well, they are just pure fancy!
