Many years ago, a group of friends came together to sing traditional Christmas carols in harmony and costume. We mostly sang music from the 19th century and earlier. We occasionally sang outside 18th century buildings during their candlelight tours. We didn't start out passing the hat but a hat was there and folks put money into it. We paid for our dinners and ciders and we made people smile. We were asked to sing at old folks' homes, private caroling parties, and even as a sort of singing telegram - a private present for an elderly mom. At this time of year, we wanted to make a Joyeful Noise, and spread some warmth and joy in the darkest time of the year. That was what it was all about.
