Patrick Henry certainly took the Biblical commandment, “Be fruitful and multiply,” very seriously. With his first wife Sarah he had six children. Shortly after she died in 1775, Henry, at age 41, married 22-year old Dorothea Dandridge who bore the Virginia governor eleven children. Phew! Hard to believe Dorothea didn’t keep the old horndog satisfied. But how else can you explain his clarifying final plea to the British, “Give me liberty or give me Beth.” Whoever the heck Beth was.
