June 4th is Old Maids Day. An objectionable title for an exceptional day. This almost-official national holiday began at the end of WWII when soldiers were returning home, looking to get married, have kids, and live the American dream they had fought so hard for. Dances and socials were held in cities all around the country to give the thousands of returning men a chance to meet and greet with the thousands of women who had been impatiently waiting for their return. Thousands of females yearning to become wives, longing to become mothers because society had trained them all their lives to believe that they would end up being an ugly old maid if they dared to dream of a different happily ever after.
